Simply striking and strikingly simple. Recipes, crafts, home decor and general life hacks that are easy yet impressive.
I have spent quite a bit of time over the past year organizing and re-organizing the house, trying to find the perfect solution for storage or display for the stuff in my life. I think I’ve settled on most methods for storing stuff, but the 2 that remain the most difficult are shoes and jewelry/accessories. If there’s a holy grail of shoe storage, I have yet to discover it. However, I think I did find…rather hacked…an amazing organization solution for my jewelry and accessories. And the irony is? It’s actually a shoe tree meant to store footwear. Oh the humanity!
This is a floor to ceiling shoe tree that is pressure mounted with springs so it can accomodate up to a 10 foot ceiling.
The great thing about this shoe tree is that if you observe closely, each tier is basically a bottomless basket with prongs. Lots and lots of prongs to hang stuff off of. The middle basket is actually meant to store accessories such as hats or mitts. I found mine for $15 at Marshalls (!!!) and had originally purchased it to hang the kids’ plushies and toys. I may buy a second one for that purpose seeing how successful this little project wound up being.
To fix the bottomless basket problem, I fashioned a bottom out of cake boards which fit perfectly! I happened to have 10″ cake boards lying around, but if you wanted a lip to the bottom, I am thinking disposable aluminum pie plates would be amazing. I happened to have a clear disposable plastic pie cover lying around and lined one of the tiers with it. I really like that it is transparent.
To transform your shoe tree into a jewelry and accessories organizer you will need:
A shoe tree (You can find shorter free standing ones as well if you don’t want such a large one)
Liners – aluminum pie plates, cardboard, cake boards, paper plates ….
Pencil and exacto knife
1) BEFORE you assemble the shoe tree as per instructions, place your liner into the basket and turn over. Repeat for all baskets EXCEPT the designated accessories basket that already has a wired bottom.
2) Trace the centre opening of the basket
3) Using a very sharp knife, cut out the circle and fit snugly into the bottom of the basket.
Now assemble shoe tree as per instructions.
I love how it turned out!! With all the different sized slots I can hang my wristlets, sunnies, scarves, hair bands, and jewelry. I added small little bowls to hold rings. But now all my stuff is laid out and easy to find.
An added bonus is that each tier is not fixed, so it spins for easy access.
The accessories basket with the wired bottom is perfect to hang earrings off of. I don’t wear earrings often so I don’t own dangly ones to demonstrate, but I do have a small collection of sweater clips which fit perfectly.
I now have 1 tier for bracelets, another for my brooches/rings, accessories, and even one for miscellaneous stuff like lip balms, hand cream, hair ties, safety pins etc. I am so in love love love with this hack.
