99 Simply Striking Tips and Life Hacks

I’ve got 99 problems, but it ain’t one of these! Below is a compendium of tips posted daily on my Twitter feed. I thought it would be nice to house them all in one large post.   1. A quick spray of oil in measuring cups and spoons release difficult ingredients like honey and PB with ease
  1. Use a slotted dish drying rack in a cupboard to store pot lids or Tupperware lids.
  1. Eyeliner crayon is too hard? Blast the tip with a blow dryer for 5 seconds will soften it, making it glide on smoothly.
  1. Stale loaf of French bread? Preheat oven to 325, quickly run the entire loaf under cold tap and bake for 15 min. Almost like fresh
  1. Use a lazy Susan in your cupboards, pantry or fridge to maximize space, keep organized and for easy access.
  1. Wrapping celery in aluminum foil makes it last longer. Soaking stalks in ice water crisps it up and brings it back to life.
  1. Use a hair straightener to iron collars or pant pleats, or even to touch up small wrinkles.
  1. Reheat your pizza in a frying pan or skillet. Perfectly melty cheese and crunchy crust.
  1. Rubbing a paste made of cream of tartar and water will make your stainless steel appliances shine.
  1. To clean your microwave, place slices of lemon in a bowl with 1/2C water on high for 3 minutes. Remove bowl and wipe the inside down.
  1. Adding a small dab of white eyeshadow on the inner corner of your top lid will make you eyes appear larger
  1. Only need half an avocado? Keep the pit in the remaining half and it will stay fresh longer and won’t brown.
  1. Use clear tape to tape your 3rd and 4th toe together. Makes wearing heels much more comfortable by preventing foot from spreading.
  1. Lettuce looking wilted? Soak in ice water to re-crisp.
  1. Have a wet mess like vomit to clean up? Sprinkle cat litter or sand to absorb the smell and liquid.
  1. Place a few grains of rice into your salt shaker to prevent salt from clumping.
  1. Want to thinly slice meat for stir fries? Place in the freezer for 15-20 minutes to firm it up and make slicing easier.
  1. Wipe down a grater with a little oil to prevent foods like cheese from sticking.
  1. Wash your bananas with soapy water immediately after bringing home to prevent fruit flies.
  1. To keep sliced apples from turning brown soak them in a bowl of 7-Up or other citrus flavored soda.
  1. A silk or satin pillowcase is great for thinning hair or prevent ruining your ‘do as the texture is more gentle on the hair and scalp.
  1. To prevent brown sugar from hardening, place a slice of bread in the container.
  1. Want to return hard left over rice to it’s original soft form? Place rice in bowl, fill with water, drain, and microwave for 2min.
  1. Dabbing a little peppermint oil on lips or mixing with lipgloss will plump lips. It is the main ingredient in commercial lip plumpers.
  1. Soaking berries in a 1 parts vinegar 10 parts water allows it to stay fresh longer and prevents fruit from going mouldy.
  1. Have curly hair? Use an old t-shirt to pat and squeeze out water after washing instead of towel. Smoother curls/less frizzies.
  1. Allergic to the nickel in costume jewelry? Paint the pieces with some clear nail polish.
  1. Have some coffee filters lying around and not know what to do with them? Use them to cover food in microwave to prevent splatters.
  1. After blow drying hair, finish it off with a blast of cold air. This will increase shine and set the hairstyle longer.
  1. To scrub your sink to a high shine and/or remove stubborn stains, cut a lemon in half, dip in salt and use as a scrubber.
  1. Puffy under eye circles? A dab of Preparation H will put the swelling down.
  1. A gentle exfoliator for sensitive skin: mix some baking soda with your favorite cleanser.
  1. To reduce the redness of pimples dab some eye drops for red eyes.
  1. For crystal clear ice cubes, pour boiling water into ice tray right before setting in the freezer.
  1. Rinsing your mouth with mouth wash before brushing makes your teeth feel much cleaner.
  1. Freezing a damp sponge and placing in a ziploc bag makes a quick and easy ice pack for lunches.
  1. No need to purchase a special stainless steel bar to rid hands of smell (garlic, onion, fish, etc), just rub against faucet tap.
  1. Need a quick way to scent a room? Dab some essential oil or spritz perfume onto lightbulb and turn on.
  1. For all the home gardeners: A small 4×6 photo album or zippered CD organizer makes a great seed packet organizer.
  1. Pluck your brows after a hot shower. This will open pores and hurt less.
  1. To get homemade cookies soft and chewy, substitute half the flour with bread flour. The higher gluten content makes it chewier.
  1. DIY brown sugar: 1 cup white granulated sugar + 1 Tbsp molasses. Combine thoroughly.
  1. No more need for packaged microwave popcorn. You can make the same thing by placing kernals in a brown lunch bag, fold top over 2x.
  1. Warm milk, butter and any other ingredients before mixing into mashed potatoes to ensure the smoothest and fluffiest texture.
  1. Custom mix nail polish shade: 1 bottle clear polish + finely crushed eyeshadow. Pour in shadow, shake well.
  1. To release the flavours of older dried spices, heat the herbs or spices in a frying pan.
  1. For a sleek tailored look invest in having your off the rack clothes taken in by a seamstress for a perfect fit.
  1. Salt helps soften garlic. Add a pinch of salt when mincing garlic to make the job much easier.
  1. Microwave your body lotion for 5-10 sec for a luxurious, cozy and spa like experience.
  1. Add a tsp of baking soda into the pot of water when boiling eggs. This will make peeling the shell much easier.
  1. You should spend at least 2 minutes rinsing out shampoo from hair to make sure it is all washed out and prevent build up.
  1. When baking a cake try to ensure that all ingredients are at room temp. eggs, butter, and milk. Results in a much better cake
  1. The paper napkins from Starbucks make great blotting papers so keep a few in your bag for oily skin days.
  1. If you need to juice a citrus fruit, roll the fruit on the counter pushing down firmly with palms to release the juice before cutting.
  1. Dunk freshly painted nails into a bowl of ice water dries the polish quickly.
  1. When substituting dried herbs with fresh, use 1/3 amount of dried herbs as they are more intense in flavour.
  1. Soaking eggplant slices in salt water draws out bitterness, Once soaked rinse with fresh water and dry with paper or tea towel.
  1. Slip paper or work sheets into photo albums and turn them into dry erase books for kids.
  1. To peel a tomato easily, make cut a + sign at the bottom of tomato put in boiling water 1 min. Move to ice water. Peel will slide off.
  1. Finishing up that bottle of olive oil? Place entire bottle in a bowl of hot water to get every last bit out.
  1. Bake bacon by laying them flat on cookie sheets at 375 for 20min. You can bake in bulk and they come out perfectly flat.
  1. Use an ice cream scoop to fill your muffin and cupcake pans with batter
  1. Keep loofah/pumice stone in the shower and buff heels every time you shower. Reg. maintenance will keep your feet pretty all the time.
  1. To make the perfect separated rice, make sure to rinse rice several times first then boil with extra water and then drain.
  1. Embarrassing clogged toilet and no plunger in sight? Try pouring the hottest water from the tap and pouring into toilet.
  1. Rub dryer sheets against baseboards to dust, and prevent dust from sticking in the future
  1. Have a hard time removing price tags and stickers? Blast with hair dryer for 15 secs, the heat will melt the glue and peels right off.
  1. Hang miniature mirrored ball ornaments on Christmas tree. The lights will bounce off the mirrored balls creating a dazzling look
  1. Butter too cold for spreading on toast? Use a parmesan grater to finely shred for easy and even distribution.
  1. Use muffin trays in drawers to help organize jewelry, office supplies, or other small objects.
  1. Run several lines of hot glue across the underside of a rug and let dry. The rug will no longer slip around.
  1. Use over the door pocket shoe organizers to organize anything from barbies/toys to snacks to electrical and charging cables.
  1. Make corn on the cob in the microwave. Shuck cobs, wrap in wet paper towels and microwave on high for 5 min +1min for every extra cob.
  1. Fill empty hand soap dispensers with shampoo or condition to make it easier to dispense.
  1. Keep some dryer sheets in your drawer at work. Quick anti-static solution, just wipe on offending area.
  1. Shred chicken like a boss by using your mixer with a paddle attachment on cooled chicken
  1. Need to keep food warm longer, esp. for buffets or parties, microwave raw rice, place in blown or plate and place dish on top.
  1. Paint your keys with different nail polish colors to tell them apart.
  1. Nail buffers refresh nails to a high shine in a pinch. I keep them handy in purse and at work.
  1. Use sticky notes to clean the crevices in your keyboard
  1. Hard time finding longer tees and tanks for layering? Purchase from Tall sizing.
  1. Homemade slushy ice pack. Mix 2 cups water with 1/3C vodka (or 1C rubbing alcohol) in ziploc bag and freeze.
  1. Mix a little cooking oil and sugar or salt for a great, fast, and easy way to exfoliate hands.
  1. Burnt food in pots? Fill halfway with water, 1/2 cup salt, and 1tbsp dish detergent. Boil and burnt food will lift off. #tip
  1. Easy eye make-up remover. Mix 2 pts olive oil with 1 pts water (distilled prevents spoiling) into a bottle. Shake before each use.
  1. Rub length of thread against wax candle to prevent tangling and easier sewing by hand.
  1. Hanging something with more than 1 hole, use painters tape on item, mark holes, move the tape to wall and mark off where to drill.
  1. To ripen tomatoes quicker, wrap them individually in newspaper and leave on the counter.
  1. Don’t have a mirror handy? Use the camera function on your smart phone.
  1. Line pots with coffee filters before adding soil to prevent the soil from falling out.
  1. Apply clear polish over the thread on buttons to prevent them from popping off.
  1. Cut a lemon in half and rub away stains in plastic containers.
  1. Use your hands to snap off the ends of asparagus. It will snap off just where the woody end starts.
  1. Need space to chill drinks for a party? Fill washing machine with ice and drinks. When water has melted run spin cycle to drain.
  1. Use plastic wrap to cover gap between mixer and bowl when mixing flour or powdered sugar to keep from making a mess.
  1. Smooth out frosting on cakes easily by using a blow dryer on hot setting.
  1. Use tissue boxes to store plastic grocery bags that can pulled out one by one easily.
  1. Place live lobsters in freezer for 15 minutes, will put them to sleep right before boiling.
  1. Store left over fresh herbs by wrapping them in damp paper towels.
