Art Inspiration: Tamara de Lempicka

Today’s instalment of Monday Muse is a painting by Polish artist Tamara de Lempicka. Lempicka is most famous for her art deco paintings featuring portraits of men and women using strong and bold lines. She is probably the most famous artist in the art deco genre, a style she parlayed from her love of cubism.

The specific painting I selected was La Dormeuse, or the sleeping woman. She is the perfect inspiration for an elegant evening outfit reminiscent of the 1930’s.

The red dress with a slight drape and cut on a bias is a direct nod to the elegant satin gowns of the period. The lines of the shoe reminds me of the Chrysler Building, the most famous art deco style structure. The jewelry reflects the period’s love of filigree design, and its love of large bold pieces.
